Pre-Recycling Material Analysis of NMC Lithium-Ion Battery Cells from Electric Vehicles

Environmental concerns push for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and technologies with low carbon footprint. In the transportation sector, this drives transition toward electric vehicles (EVs), which are nowadays mainly based on lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). As number of produced EVs is rapidly growing, large amount waste expected future. Recycling seems to be one most promising end-of-life (EOL) methods; it reduces raw material consumption battery production environmental burden. Thus, work introduces comprehensive pre-recycling characterization nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) LIB cells from fully vehicle (BEV), represents basis cost-effective environmentally friendly recycling focusing efficiency implemented technique. The composition NCM 622 cell was determined; included LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 spinel 15 μm Al-based current collector (cathode), graphite layer 60 copper foil (anode), 25 PE/PVDF polymer separator, LiPF6 salt electrolyte 1:3 ratio primary solvents DMC DEC. performed research series X-ray, infrared (IR) measurements, chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), inductively coupled plasma–optical emission (ICP-OES) an aqueous solution dissolved electrolytes. These results will used subsequent works devoted optimizing suitable technique considering economic perspectives.
